Marc Mahfoud is a vocalist, lyricist, instrumentalist, composer and producer. In 1992, Marc’s parents migrated from Syria to Germany where he spent most of his childhood and youth. Whilst visiting high school, Marc deepened his interest and education in classical guitar. After graduating from Aloisiuskolleg in Bonn in 2009, Marc moved to the Netherlands to study European Studies at Maastricht University. This enabled Marc to couple his continually intensifying passion for art and music with multidimensional perspectives. In his latest development, Marc attempts to liaise (social) science and sound into an honest fusion of traditional instruments and electronically driven compositions. Even though his idea of sound is perpetually changing, Marc safeguards the impulse of constant reinvention and critical thinking. Currently, the topics of migration and global warming inform Marc’s projects and distinguish his work in an unconventional way.

As Vice Mayor Spacial Development in Maastricht, I am responsible for the development of the new Sphinx Quarter. Three elements in my portfolio converge in this location. City Planning, Monuments and Sustainability go hand in hand and together they form the Sphinx Quarter: a typical part of the city that Maastricht had been lacking so far. With more exciting, rough edges than Maastricht is known for. Here, in and around the old industrial monuments of the Sphinx, we offer ample room for new target groups and developments. I stumbled through life, experienced great successes, failures, a divorce, loss of businesses, setbacks, and went through fear and pain. Through a life changing experience, I realised I was holding up a story, a story which I thought the world wanted to see. It wasn’t me. I realised I was unhappy, and I changed my story. It’s not about what I’ve learned, but what I’ve let go off. I let go off the feeling of not being good enough and feeling the need of always having to prove myself. I now help others to achieve the same.

Being a child in WW2, I experienced the bombardment of Rotterdam, became a refugee, and lived through the hunger winter. I learned about fear, solidarity and hope.

Now working as design group Demotech, our network created a ‘demonstrative site’ in Maastricht that offers inspiration and workshops about the potential of design for Sustainability, while preparing tools for a sustainable life style.

Planned for years ahead is support for political activism with DemoUnit display towers to be used in rallies and demonstrations in the rich world. For deep poverty work continues to green 3W-slums with Vertical Gardening and the student TreeDripper project for massive tree planting.

Helène Klein

Helène Klein

Co-founder Studio TRUT

My name is Helène Klein and I see myself as a Visual Artist.
I am in love with colour, textiles, prints, materials and light. These things always surround my artistic work. When I start a new project I often get inspired by somehting small. A small piece of cloth or a colour that at that moment touches something inside of me. Ideas always progress in my head, they never stop growing. Sometimes I have an idea in the beginning of my project and it turns out to be something completely different in the end. This is what I love and how I am as a person. It’s an organic growth, a neverending story. When I have reached an end product it’s still moving, progressing into another idea and a different shape but still taking some of the old story with it, maybe it’s in the material or the colour but it is there.

Deniece Clermonts

Deniece Clermonts

Artist

A while ago, I had to pitch myself as an artist and used the words “creative explosion” to describe myself. I think I did a great job doing this. For me, creating is a necessary passion; I just can not live in a world where I’m not allowed to express myself the way I want to. The creations exist from deep within and when I travel, near or far, my sketchbook and pen are always travelling with me. This is why I scribble almost every day.

I went to MAFAD Maastricht, art school, where I graduated as a fashion designer. I’ve always been fascinated by anatomy and psyche and very often these subjects are translated in my work.

I hope I can inspire people and that my creative eruptions will contribute to this.

Dorieke Schreurs

Dorieke Schreurs

Independent Artist

Sustainability, climate change, our relationship to the earth we live on and the species we share it with – these are the defining issues of my generation and of the generations to come. The art world should take a stand. It has an important role to play in this changing world. Art about subjects such as climate change, mass extinction, and wasteful consumption doesn’t have to be doom and gloom. I have found that real, meaningful change stems from positivity. My art is about reconnecting with nature, reviving that sense of wonder and care for all that surrounds us. My art is me, digging deeper, finding a new path, inspiring others, doing my bit, hopefully sowing some seeds of change.
